NLEA Conversion Fact Sheet: Vitamin E
In 2016, the FDA updated the Daily Value (DV) and Reference Daily Intake (RDI) for several nutrients, including Vitamin E.
The below table reflects the changes in RDI’s from 1993 to 2016:
Reference Daily Intake (RDI) |
|
1993 |
2016 |
30 International Units (IU) |
15 milligrams α-Tocopherol |
The RDIs are published by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and are based on the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) of alpha(α)-Tocopherol, as it is the only form of Vitamin E maintained in the blood and has biological activity.
Thus, Vitamin E per NLEA regulations (or mg label claim) is defined as milligrams α-Tocopherol.
α-Tocopherol has 8 stereoisomers, but only the four with a higher biological activity (2R) were considered when establishing the RDA for Vitamin E:
2R-stereoisomers |
2S-stereoisomers |
RRR (natural) |

The table on the attached flyer outlines helpful information for understanding and converting Vitamin E per NLEA regulations.
