Lutein and Zeaxanthin Analysis: Recent Study by NIH Shows Increased Efficacy of AREDS2 Formula for Slowing Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Over 15 years after the completion of the first Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and 10 years since AREDS2, a new, updated, report1 has been published by JAMA Ophthalmology. This new report which analyzed the AREDS2 formula, which substituted lutein and zeaxanthin for beta-carotene, has shown that the new formulation is more effective at reducing risk of AMD progression than the original beta-carotene formula. AMD, which has no known cure, is a degenerative disease of the retina eventually leading to blindness. This study may mean some transitions in the dietary supplements supporting eye health. While many supplements for eye health may include lutein and zeaxanthin already, there will likely be a great push from consumers to purchase these supplements.
