Hemp/CBD Personal Care & Cosmetic Products: The Importance of Preservative Efficacy Test (PET)
With the relatively recent introduction of CBD and various hemp-derived terpenes into personal care and cosmetic products, we are left with many unknowns. Across the board, cosmetic and personal care products can be composed of hundreds of different ingredients and we still don’t have a full understanding of how hemp-derived compounds will interact with them. In addition, we do not know the impact (either positive or negative) of hemp-derived compounds could have on antimicrobial preservatives.
Antimicrobial preservatives are added to products to prevent or limit microbial contamination, which can occur during normal conditions of storage and use. The efficacy of an antimicrobial preservative may be enhanced or diminished by the active constituent of the preparation, by the formulation in which it is incorporated, or by the container and/or closure being used as the final packaging material.
Your CBD and hemp-derived multiple-use cosmetic and personal care products that contain preservatives need to be tested to assure the preservation, or antimicrobial action is adequate to fight the introduction of microorganisms. It is also important to perform this testing with every formulation change on your product.
