3 Tips on How to Partner with the Right Testing Laboratory
Posted by Jeff Stassi, Eurofins Analytical Services Manager
Contract manufacturers are often very good at manufacturing products within certain specifications so their expertise lies in their ability to develop and formulate products. It is rare to find a contract manufacturer that has an equivalent expertise in analytical testing. Many contract manufacturers may have certain analytical capabilities, but often do not have the scientific depth or the infrastructure to have a full-scale laboratory capable of executing and confirming that their specifications are met, especially in the finished product. A reputable contract laboratory will have the experience to test the products from the incoming raw materials all the way throughout the manufacturing process. They also bring an independent unbiased approach to providing test results that are removed from some of the influences that may be tied to the operational arm of the company, thus eliminating any conflict of interest that may arise.
So, here are three ways to be confident that you are selecting the right laboratory.
Pre-screen the laboratory to assure they have the qualifications and experience you are looking for.
With the complexity of the testing involved, especially in multi-component dietary supplements, there is comfort in knowing that the laboratory you are partnering with has the breadth of knowledge and experience to perform the testing effectively. You do not want the laboratory testing your products for the very first time and learning on the fly. Using inexperienced laboratories can cause delays and put your business at risk, not only operational risk but also the risk of regulatory compliance.
Conduct a technical assessment of the laboratory
The most important aspect of any laboratory you are thinking about partnering with is their competence with the analytical methods. The best way to understand and ensure that the laboratory is using methods that are fit-for-purpose is to look at the data and validation that supports it. The supplement industry term is to use a scientifically valid method. This means a method that is accurate, precise, and fit for its intended use. Therefore, do not hesitate to discuss this with any lab partner you are working with. The responsibility of adhering to this requirement lies with the brand owner/manufacturer.
Perform an audit to be sure
Conduct an interview to help screen potential lab partners as you are trying to get at the core values and experience that a potential candidate may have. It is often overlooked that the burden of quality cannot be outsourced and the control and oversight still lies with the manufacturer ensuring that the laboratory is following proper quality procedures. At the very least, send an audit questionnaire to assess testing, quality systems, and key procedural items that may be important to your business. Better yet, conduct an on-site audit so you can dig deeper into the quality and technical abilities the lab may have. There is nothing better than to see it for yourselves.
When looking for a reputable contract laboratory make sure to use these three tips to make sure that you can be confident in the results you receive.
