From Contamination to Clarity: Finalizing the PFAS Drinking Water Regulation

The long awaited PFAS drinking water regulation has been developed by the United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and will be effective on June 25, 2024. This new rule sets the nationwide enforceable MCLs for five individual PFAS, including PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA (known as “GenX chemicals”). In addition, EPA also establishes the enforceable Hazard Index MCL for a mixture of two or more of four specific PFAS (including PFNA, PFHxS, HFPO-DA, and PFBS) to evaluate potential health risks from exposure.

The impacts of this new National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) on public water systems are significant in many aspects. This webinar will primarily focus on the followings:

  1. Provide a review of this federal PFAS regulation to have a clear understanding of its scope, promulgation, monitoring requirements, MCL determination, and treatment strategies.
  2. Present the available Fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR5) occurrence data to foresee the potential challenges for public water systems to comply with this regulation.
  3. Discuss the grandfathering of existing PFAS occurrence data to meet the Initial Monitoring requirements and to reduce the Ongoing/Compliance Monitoring frequencies.
